If you are student in high school student and just beginning to think about your future, in what is sure to be a volatile global economy for years to come, attending college may be at the forefront of you mind. But, you find yourself wondering how you are ever going to be able to afford to pay for a college education; a scholarship may be the opportunity you have been seeking.
No doubt it is increasingly expensive to attend a good university and costs are only expected to rise. Scholarships and/or Grants can provide a significant amount of financial aid to those who either deserve it in terms of their academic achievements or for those who may be at disadvantage financially, or in many instances, both. Either way, paying for college with scholarships and grants can provide a measurable and significant pathway to higher education.
A scholarship is a merit-based financial award that an academically savvy student can apply for. A scholarship can last for one or two academic years, or can apply to the entire duration or to the achievement of the desired degree. A grant is completely different and there are many different types. Grants are typically “needs based” and can vary depending on the type of student. Whether you are applying for a scholarship or a grant, understanding the application process will be fundamental to success. The application forms are typically extensive and require great attention to detail and instruction. Many applications are discarded when requirements are not met. There are literally thousands of applicants for specific scholarships and grants and your ability in providing accurate and compelling information addressing all requirements will determine your ultimate success or failure.
Once you understand the application process it is important to be truthful and honest in your application as each application is scrutinized and investigated. Falsifying your application will cause it to be immediately rejected and damage your credibility. Be honest and compelling with your answers to the specific questions contained in the application. The more comfortable you are with your achievements, and yes, failures too, the more likely you are to convey your passion for that which you are in pursuit.
Additionally, you will also want to ensure that you apply for several grants or scholarships as this will increase your overall chances of obtaining a successful result. You never want to put all your eggs in one basket, diversify and pursue all your educational options, even the less desirable choices.
