Grants and Funding for Out-of-State Students

If you live in the United States and you decide that you wish to attend a college or university that is in a different state from where you live then it would cost you more money than if you decided to go to a local college. It may not seem fair but home students and out-of-state students do not pay the same amount.

While this is the case in the United States it is not the case in other countries throughout the world. For example, if you lived in the United Kingdom it does not matter where you go to school because the tuition, housing and other fees would all be the same.

There is no rule that says that a person in Florida cannot attend a school in California, or vice versa. If you live in one state but have your heart set on attending a school in another state then the added costs can cause undue financial strain on you. That is when you need to start looking for scholarship opportunities to help lighten the load you will be carrying. Determining what school grants state by state and scholarships are available would be helpful for starters.

While there are scholarships geared towards students who plan to study in different states than where they reside, they are few and far between. For this reason there is plenty of competition for this particular type of scholarship. The application process is long and very involved. You need to apply months in advance because it could take that long to hear anything back.

A scholarship application form for out-of-state financial aid is much the same as any other type of scholarship application form. You must fill out the form in its entirety, leaving nothing out. You must provide a list of your activities and interests as well as write an essay about yourself. You also must give a logical and well thought out reason for why you wish to attend a school in a different state. Here is where you need to be very careful. If there is a course of study at the college you wish to attend that cannot be found at any colleges in your home state then that is a reason that can work very much in your favor. However saying that your boyfriend or girlfriend will be attending the school you want to go to is not an adequate reason.

Browse the Internet for scholarship possibilities for out-of-state applicants. You might also want to speak with the guidance counsellor at your school for some suggestions, advice and resources. Be aware that finding scholarships to attend your first year at a school tend to be more difficult to come by then scholarships for those who presently attend a college in their home towns or states who wish to transfer in their second or third years.
