Finding the money to earn a college or university education can be difficult. It can prove even more difficult if you are a member of a visible minority. The minority group in the United States includes those who are African American, Asian, Hispanic, Native American and women.
Grants are different from scholarships in that they are based on the financial needs of those applying for them. Scholarships on the other hand are connected to some type of merit such as academic achievement or another type of achievement such as sports. The goal of grant programs is to address the issues faced by the underrepresented members of society, which is to say minority students. The primary source for education grants is the government.
Categories of Minority Grants
Education grants for minority students are broken down into two main categories. There are ethnic minority grants and non-ethnic minority grants. Let us take a quick look at both of these now.
Ethnic minority grants offer financial assistance to students based on ethnic challenges that they face in earning a degree program. Examples of these would be education grants for African
American students or Hispanic students. The ultimate goal of these programs is to diversify education as well as professional fields of the work force.
Non-ethnic minority grants are based on financial need and are meant to help those students who face physical barriers and/or who are disadvantaged or especially challenged in one way or another. These individuals are those who face unique obstacles in earning an education and pursuing a professional career. Grants for students with disabilities are an example of a non-ethnic grant. These grants benefit people who have physical challenges as well as those who suffer from learning disabilities such as ADHD or autism.
Another example of a non-ethnic minority grant would be a grant for women. These education grants for minority students make it possible for all women regardless of what background they come from to attend an institution of higher education and to earn a degree. Women’s grants also enable women to break into fields that historically have been male dominated.
Where to Look for Minority Grants
Once you know what grants are out there the next thing you need to do is to find out how to locate these grants. Federal and state governments tend to be the most generous in this regard. The need-based assistance is available for both minority and/or students with a low income. There are larger political and socioeconomic purposes connected in with offering these education grant for students but for the most part the goal of them is to build communities that are self-sustaining and by so doing strengthen the economy and make it more self-sustaining also.
Some of the most popular federal grants for minority students include the Pell Grant, the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), the Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) and the National SMART Grant.
While all of these grants are not specifically designed to be applied for by minority students, these federal grant programs welcome the applications of minority students as well as disabled students.
It is important to note that the Pell Grant is the precursor for other federal government grants. If you do not apply for this grant, or if you are not eligible for it then you cannot apply for the FSEOG, the SMART Grant or the AC Grant. To apply for any of these grants you must be a recipient of the Pell Grant.
